Buried Hatred Toward God – National Prayer Chapel

Scriptures Used During Today’s Broadcast: Romans 8 (main text), 1 John 1, James 1:7-8

The question to ask and search the scriptures for is What is this buried hatred toward God referenced in Romans 8? Is it part of being converted or something else? God must take us to the depths to expose the profound depravity in our souls. My understanding is that this carnality is what some of the old-timers have referred to as the “old man”, while others, such as Watchman Nee, called it “the outer shell” or the “soulish man”. The label doesn’t matter much, but it must be removed. Because this is explained in so many different ways, as increased the confusion, that’s been true with me.

Take a look at what W.B. Godbey, the powerful holiness preacher from the 19th century, said about it:

This carnal mind is none other than Satan’s own mind imparted to humanity in the Fall. God is the pure Holy Spirit, and has the sole right to rule men, angels and the universe. The carnal mind subordinates soul, mind, spirit and the entire being to the animal body, in that way alienating you from God, brutalizing and turning you over to the devil.

I want to give you another, more detailed explanation from our Brother Godbey, this one from James 1:7-8:

“Let not that person think that the double-souled man, most unstable in all his ways, shall receive anything from the Lord.” The Bible describes the sinner, one soul (or mind), and that a bad one; the sanctified man, one soul, and that a good one, while James’ double souled man is an unsanctified Christian. We are born into the world with the carnal mind, transmitted from Satan through Adam the first. In regeneration, the Holy Ghost imparts the mind of Christ, simultaneously subjugating the carnal mind and giving grace to keep it in subjection. Then follows the civil war in the heart between the good soul and the bad one, i. e., the Spirit and the flesh. In sanctification after regeneration, the Pentecostal fire consumes the carnal mind, leaving the mind of Christ to reign in the heart without a rival. We see from this Scripture that the unsanctified Christian must totally abrogate the carnal mind, and get victory over it, in order to prevail with God in prayer. “Most unstable in all his ways.” O, how significantly the Holy Ghost describes the unsanctified man! Today he is all honey and, you think, a Christian; tomorrow he is all vinegar and you think he is a sinner. Truly his religion is always in the subjunctive (a grammatical mood, not a tense, that expresses a speaker’s attitude towards a statement added by Brother Ed) mood, so you never know where to locate him. He does things unbecoming a Christian and repents at once. O, how he needs sanctification to establish him. (W.B. Godbey’s New Translation and Commentary)

The question then is not whether you have the carnal mind because we all have it, unless it has been removed by the Holy Spirit. Are you willing to cry out to Jesus for victory, so that you may be entirely sanctified?

There’s much to pray over and consider as you listen to the message today. So the question is, have you truly been converted, and if so, have you been sanctified, and has the carnal nature been removed from your soul? Here’s our dear Brother Godbey for his translation of Hebrews 12:14:
