This fascinating study broadens our understanding of the gospel beyond individual salvation. John the Baptist came preaching repentance and forgiveness of sins. He performed no miracles. But Jesus came in great Holy Spirit power preaching, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.” In other words, repentance and forgiveness “go before” the gospel. They prepare the way. But, if repentance and forgiveness aren't the gospel, then what is the gospel?
The gospel narratives show that gospel is “the power of God” (Romans 1:16). To “believe the gospel” is to believe that God's power and authority have come to the earth. This power destroys every work of the devil–including sin, sickness, insanity, demonic power, and death–and sets up Christ's kingdom.
Most of us have known “only the baptism of John.” We've repented. But Jesus came to “baptize [us] in the Holy Spirit and in fire.” Will you believe this? Will you move beyond repentance and conversion, and fully take hold of the gospel?
