The story of the prodigal son expresses the Father’s compassion and power. When a sinner repents, the Father immediately forgives and restores him. He doesn’t leave His son in dirty clothes, working with the servants. He doesn’t require His son to sit in time-out, or drag out the past, or earn his way back into the family. Instead, the Father forgives and forgets the past, and rejoices in His now-obedient son.
To receive our heavenly Father’s compassion, we must go through the same “change of mind,” or repentance, that the son did. He decided to leave his disobedience, and to humbly serve and obey his father.
